When you wake up in the morning what’s your mental morning routine? Now you may be sitting there thinking to yourselves, “I don’t have a mental morning routine”… well my guess is you do! You just probably haven’t referred to it in this way before.

Let me give you some examples…
Example 1) Do you wake up in the morning and think, “Oh F$%k, is it that the time already?”
Then you imagine the difficult stuff ahead of you and allow yourself to feel overwhelmed. And to finish it all off you walk into the bathroom, look in the mirror and say to yourself, “Crikey… look at me… how old… look at the wrinkles… what a mess!” Finally, putting your clothes on and in a hyper-critical tone, “Does my butt look big in this?”

Clearly this is not a strategy for helping you to have a great day!

Or do you do this?

Example 2) Wake up in the morning and ask yourself, “Which part of my body feels the most comfortable.” Then you stop and think about the things that are happening during the day that make you feel the most excited and valued. You think about the challenges ahead and see them as opportunities to grow as a person. Then moving into the bathroom you look at yourself in the mirror and focus on how your eyes sparkle with life! Putting your clothes on you imagine a more confident, dynamic version of you… and then you step into this ideal you… and allow yourself to feel good!

Now the truth is you probably haven’t given any conscious thought as to what your mental processes were going to be in the morning… perhaps you didn’t realize that it was indeed a choice!

Now what I really want is for people to start reclaiming control over their own brains. If you find yourself going through a morning strategy more like the first example I gave, then congratulate yourself for noticing it and then decide to do things differently!

If you want something to change in your life… then change something in your life!
